A Creative Collaboration with composer Luisa Antoni

A few years ago, I embarked on a journey to explore new compositions for my solo cello repertoire. In 2019, while researching contemporary composers, I was introduced to Luisa Antoni through a mutual connection. She graciously shared several manuscripts and offered fascinating insights into Slovenia’s vibrant yet lesser-known classical music scene.

During our conversations, I discovered that Luisa is not only an insightful musicologist but also a renowned composer. With an upcoming recital in London on September 11, I asked her to create a cello and piano piece as a tribute to the victims of 9/11 in New York. Luisa accepted the challenge, drawing inspiration from the traditional ballad “Oh Shenandoah,” a melody that has become an integral part of American culture.

Her composition is nothing short of extraordinary. By deconstructing and reimagining the famous tune, Luisa infused it with a sense of vast landscapes and hope. The result is a piece that is both reflective and innovative, capturing the essence of remembrance.

This collaboration holds a special place in my heart as it marked the first time a work was composed especially for me. Recording it was a heartfelt thank-you.

Luisa has long nurtured the idea of releasing a CD featuring her music alongside performances by many artists, including myself and the pianist Pierluigi Piran. I’m excited to share that this composition is part of Luisa’s new album, Fruscii Risuonanti – da Venezia ai Balcani, passando per Cividale, Trieste, Listria.

Adding to the significance of this project, the piece was recorded in the legendary Jimi Hendrix Studio at Radio Koper Capodistria. This studio is renowned not only for its superb acoustics and state-of-the-art equipment but also for its rich history of recordings. This space has hosted some of the most influential contemporary musicians of the 21st century!
